Four Reasons It’s So Important That You LOVE What You Do

From the time they enter first grade until they graduate from college, kids and young adults are told that they should pursue their passion and find a career that will be truly fulfilling.

It might be a cliche, but I can tell you from personal experience and from working with hundreds of lawyers… it’s absolutely true. It’s critical for you, for your family, for your staff, and for your clients that you LOVE your work. Here’s why.

For yourself. If you don’t enjoy what you do, you will soon lose the motivation to get out of bed in the morning. You’ll feel that your time, your energies, and your gifts are being wasted. And there is no greater tragedy than that. You might be able to fake it for a couple of months or a couple of years… but sooner or later you’ll realize that you’re miserable, and life is too short for work that makes you miserable.  You owe it to YOURSELF to love what you do.

For your family. If you’re miserable, your family is going to suffer for it. You’ll find yourself tired and irritable at home, and your relationships with the people you love the most in the world will be strained. You owe it to your FAMILY to love what you do.

For your staff. Whether you have an office with dozens of employees or just one part-time assistant, you have a profound impact on your team. They are people with hopes and dreams just like you. They invest their time and their effort into your firm and your practice. If you’re miserable, chances are that you’re going to make them miserable as well. You owe it to your STAFF to love what you do.

For your clients. You do your best work when you’re motivated, energetic, and passionate about what you’re doing. Your clients deserve a lawyer who legitimately cares about their matter and who will pour himself or herself into it. You simply can’t perform at your best when you don’t like what you’re doing. You owe it to your CLIENTS to love what you do?
