Does Your Online Bio Reflect Your Credibility?

Your online bio is often the first impression you make on potential clients. LinkedIn… your website… directories like Avvo and Martindale-Hubbell… when a possible client is referred to you, you can bet he or she is going to use the internet to find more information. So what will they find?

One of the most important things that your bio should accomplish is communicating your credibility… making it plain as day that YOU are the right person to help the individual meet his or her legal needs. Credibility inspires confidence, and makes your audience much more willing to TRUST you with their needs.

Here are three ways to inspire credibility with your bio…

Demonstrate that you’re involved in relevant organizations and communities. It’s one thing to say that you’re focused on local small business. It’s another thing to highlight your leadership role in the chamber of commerce and your leading role in local business advocacy groups. If you’re involved in organizations that are relevant to your target market (and you should be!), make this clear in your bio. It shows that you’re walking the walk… not just talking the talk!

Point to articles, speeches, blog entries, media coverage and other content that “proves” your knowledge and ability. Do you appear on TV or on the radio? Do you write blogs and articles? Have you written a book? These, and many others, are great ways to demonstrate your credibility. So highlight them on your bio. This allows you to tell your readers that not only do you focus on commercial litigation… but you’ve literally written a book on it!

Highlight relevant awards and accomplishments. I’m not talking about fluffy awards you won in law school – most of your clients simply aren’t going to care. But DO highlight awards, accomplishments, and certifications that matter to your target audience. At the end of the day, your clients want to work with a lawyer that they can trust, and third-party validation of your ability is very powerful.
