YES, You Do Have a Personal Brand…So Take Control of It!

What’s your personal brand?

Some of the lawyers that I speak to disregard the idea at first – “I don’t have a personal brand.” When people think about a personal brand, they often think of celebrities like Donald Trump or Oprah…polar opposites of most lawyers!

But the truth is that EVERYONE has a personal brand. Your personal brand is how the world perceives you. It’s your reputation…your character…your image.

Are you trustworthy?

Are you organized?

Are you a good listener?

These questions get to the heart of your personal brand and reveal how you are perceived by your colleagues…your friends…your referral sources…and your clients!

The question is, how can you take control of your personal brand so that it presents the right image to those around you? Here are three ways you can do this:

Learn to listen. Most of us are wired to talk first…and listen second. Or perhaps you know people for whom “listening” is really just thinking about what they’re going to say next. Learn to listen…because people love to be REALLY listened to.

Follow through on your commitments. If you promise to deliver something…deliver it. If you say you’re going to be somewhere…be there. And be there when you said you were going to be there. Showing up 10 or 15 minutes late to a meeting may not seem like a big deal to you…but it sends a TERRIBLE message to the people who are waiting for you.

Take control of your body language. Our body language speaks powerfully. When you are listening, do you lean in and stay alert? Or do you stare down at your phone? When you’re speaking, are you doing it with confidence and maintaining eye contact? When you meet someone, do you give them a warm handshake and give them enough time of day to show that you’re interested in who they are and what they have to say?

These are just three ways to shape your personal brand…the list goes on forever. The takeaway I hope you get from this is simple. Your personal brand matters…so take control!
