What to Do When You DON’T Love What You Do

There’s nothing better than spending your time and your energy doing work that you LOVE. You’re excited to get up and come to work in the morning. You’re stimulated and challenged throughout the day. You’re fulfilled and you’re utilizing your gifts and abilities.

But let’s be honest… for many of us, that’s not the case. I can’t tell you how many lawyers I’ve spoken to that HATE what they’re doing every day.

Life is too short to spend it doing work that you hate. So what should you do about it?

Here are three steps that I think will be helpful.

First, figure out what you DO love. You may hate your day to day work, but chances are that there is still something within the practice of law that you are passionate about… that drove you to get into this field to begin with. Is there a specific niche that you’re passionate about? A particular type of client that you’d enjoy representing? What would your “dream job” look like?

Second, look for opportunities to work that passion into your current practice. It’s probably not realistic for you to turn your practice upside down overnight. But you can look for opportunities to incorporate your true passion into your work life… little by little, step by step, client by client. It won’t fix everything immediately, but gradually you can find more fulfillment each day.

Third, create a long-term plan to build a thriving practice that you will LOVE. In step one I asked you to envision your dream job. Now it’s time to create a realistic, step-by-step plan that will allow you to build a practice that you’ll love. It might take months. It might take years. The important thing is that you create a plan and that you work on it every single day.

If you don’t currently love what you do… but if you are committed to finding your passion and creating a practice that you WILL love and WILL be fulfilled by… we should talk. Click here to schedule a complimentary coaching session and let’s get started!

  1. Hello Paula,
I love that you’ve addressed this topic as it hits us all at one time or another, for short spurts along the way or for the length of a whole career. Your words are a wonderful reminder for us to take stalk and re-evaluate our attitude towards the work and whether our heart is involved somehow. No heart, no joy, just work, work, and more work. No one deserves that type of hell.
