How NOT to Write Your Online Bio

Your online bio can be a powerful business development tool. When a new client looks you up online, you can bet they’re going to see your bio… it’s your chance to make a good first impression and demonstrate your credibility.

But, you’ll notice that I said your bio CAN be a powerful tool… but for many lawyers, it isn’t. That’s because much of the time, the bio is written based on what the lawyer wants to say… rather than what his or her target audience wants and needs to hear!

Are you guilty of this mistake? Here are several more examples of what NOT to do when writing your online bio.

Don’t speak “practice areas.” Most business people and the general public don’t  think about what kind of lawyer they need they just know they need a lawyer.  So speak to them in THEIR language. Demonstrate that you understand their needs and that you’re passionate about helping them solve their problems and challenges.

Don’t focus on accomplishments that your clients won’t care about. You may be proud of your GPA in law school. Or the awards you won. But frankly, your clients aren’t going to be as interested in awards you received five, ten or twenty years ago as they are in what you do NOW and how you can help them TODAY. So make that your focus.

Don’t be vague about what it is that you actually do. Have you ever read an attorney bio page and realized that, even after reading it, you still don’t know what they do? Don’t make this mistake with your bio! Don’t beat around the bush, don’t use confusing terminology, don’t be afraid to “limit” yourself… tell your readers what it is that you do and exactly how you can help them! This is especially important if you’re looking to get into a new area of practice.

Your online bio can be a powerful business development tool. Is yours? If you’re not sure… let’s talk about it. Click here to schedule a complimentary coaching session and let’s get started!
